I’ve witnessed this behavior a handful of times, first at the Gauley River in Fayetteville, WV, and most recently at Dolly Sods. While camping at New River Gorge, my husband and I wandered along the river’s edge and spotted a group of dark butterflies congregating on a dimpled rock. Fascinated, I took ten too many photos and later learned that this behavior is known as “puddling”. Some butterflies, like swallowtails, sulphurs, and whites, will congregate near puddles, gravel roads, and even damp soil to sip minerals and salts from the ground.
