The Eastern Meadowlark is a stunning, chunky bird often found probing for insects in grassy fields. It’s one of my “lifer” birds, and I finally saw one during Bird Discovery Weekend at Blackwater Falls State Park. Perched atop a weathered fence post, he surveyed the grassy fields that surrounded him, revealing his bright yellow chest and dappled wings. Faintly, in the distance, I heard his flute-like song before he disappeared among the grasses.
